Project Overview
The Abuja Emergency Power Project, AEPP, was initiated to address the growing electricity demand and improve the power supply situation in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.
In 2000, Geometric Power Limited and Renatech International Limited established a joint venture to build Nigeria's first indigenously owned, private-sector power plant. The project’s technical partner was Cummins Power Generation, USA.
This pioneering initiative resulted in the development of a 15-megawatt Abuja Emergency Power Station, marking the first power generation facility built by Geometric Power in Nigeria.

Operational Timeline
The power station became operational on November 7, 2001, and was officially commissioned by Nigeria's former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on December 21, 2001.
From the date of commissioning until the end of the Emergency Power Plant contract in March 2004, the power station operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This continuous operation demonstrated the feasibility of building and sustaining a privately owned electric power company in Nigeria.
Achievements
The plant supplied uninterrupted power on demand 24/7 from commissioning in November 2001 until the end of the EPP contract in March 2004. This power was supplied to the National Electric Power Authority, NEPA, to serve a dedicated distribution network within Abuja and its environs.
Geometric Power and Renatech, as the sole managers of all facets of the project, successfully completed the installation of Nigeria's first indigenously owned and independently operated power station in record time.
The project demonstrated that it is possible to build and sustain a privately owned electric power company in Nigeria, thereby establishing a precedent for future private-sector power projects in the country.
Dedicated Network
The Abuja Emergency Power Station supplied power to NEPA for a dedicated distribution network serving key locations within Abuja and its environs.
